Misuse of Digital Media

Averille Cupples
I always teach my students that things that are transmitted in writing, do not always transmit the same tone as words that are spoken.  I can say something in person that can be construed in one fashion due to the teasing tone in my voice, or because of my body language.  However, a person reading a text or email message does not have that advantage.  They merely have words and therefore can misinterpret your meaning if you are not careful.  They also need to be careful of auto check, etc. before sending their messages.  I inadvertently called my husband a donkey horse one time due to auto check  I don't remember what I was trying to say, but I wasn't trying to call him names!  LOL.

I've also received inappropriate jokes, etc. on my work computer from fellow workers.  While they might be funny, a work email is not the appropriate venue for that.  Especially since some people would not necessarily see the humor.

My son's school has had several instances of misappropriation of digital media in the last couple of years.  A few students were suspended from school for sending / forwarding inappropriate pictures early this year.  Last year, some students were caught cheating on a test by trying to look up answers on their phone.
