Module 1 - Rights and Responsibilities. Lucas Bergmann

Share: What user rights do you feel should be part of the norms in this digital world?  What user responsibilities do you feel should be expressed in this digital world?

In reading through the other posts I see that most are focused on individual rights and responsibilities often in the context of interaction with other online users. This is certainly important and there are some good points made. I would like to look at a different issue and that is the responsibilities of the so-called tech giants and our interactions with them. A handful of large companies control most of the content on the internet today and social media companies have turned big data into big business, in this case user data. I see two sides to this as follows:

Users have the responsibility to read and understand the terms of use for any app or service they use.

Companies have the responsibility to provide an accessible,  plain language summary  of what data is being collected and how it is being used.

Steps are being made to improve this but there are still issues. For example, Amazon was recently involved in a lawsuit for collecting and storing voice samples from children even after the user had opted out. Users need access to information about their data, who can see it, how it is being used and they need to be able to trust that the information they receive is correct. Oftentimes on today’s internet that is not the case.
