Norms and Responsibilities

Jamie Cochran
I feel like it is essential that we all follow the basic norms and responsibilities when it comes to technology use and publication. One of the things that I find the most difficult is allowing my students to access all the information, but because we allow all users to write and publish this information, it is vital my students learn to navigate reliable versus non reliable sources. I also need to constantly remind myself to teach my students how to be responsible with their personal information online.

I agree with your statement that we need to teach students to be able to discern reliable sources online. After all, “if it’s on the internet, it’s got to be true”, right? I’m not even up to par on utilizing the source certificates, myself, but usually, I KNOW the sites I visit and for a certain purpose.  If we could all learn what’s a safe certificate and source and somehow be able to verify what we’re viewing is a safe and reliable source, the internet would be a better value to us all! I feel that if ANYONE else is posting something about you of a personal nature, they should get your permission to do so.
