Norms and Responsibilities

Rachel Krofta
As I read through other student posts, I notice a few common themes. The first is that it is important to acknowledge and expand on the idea of balancing user rights, such as the right to free speech, and responsibilities, such as the responsibility to share factual information that does not harm others. Another right that I saw mentioned frequently is the right to have access to information and technology. I'm not sure how this is defined or determined, as I thought it was mentioned in the introductory video that using technology is a privilege, not a right. I know in my school, access to individual devices or school-owned devices can be restricted or denied in the case that students or parents refuse to sign the acceptable use policy or violate it.

When students are taught to be good digital citizens, some norms that I believe should be included are:
Using responsible decision-making when deciding what to post or how to interact with others
How to determine if a source/information is credible
How to protect your privacy and safety online
