Norms and Responsibilities

Michael Hazel
I think it should be stressed to students that having a conversation on social media differs greatly from a private conversation, primarily in the fact that the post on social media is forever. It is recorded, documented, searchable and traceable. What you post can't be taken back. I think students today feel compelled to react to nearly every email, post, text, image, comment, etc. One thing I would suggest to students is that before they react on social media, ask themselves how important it really is to make a comment. Every post leaves a digital footprint that they will take with them forever. You never know who all will be affected one way or another by your posts, such as a future employer or potential employer. I would liken it to a green light when turning left...we shouldn't have the attitude that green means "go" and you are 100% protected from harming yourself or others. You must yield to oncoming traffic first. In other words, see the whole picture and think before you push send.
