Norms and Responsibilities

Lila Maher
Privacy and the ability to share with others is an essential right as a human being, the world of technology is no different.  However, if we are not taking the time to truly understand that what we are posting and where we are posting, and even what we are searching for can have a dramatic impact on our personal lives.  What others may find as a "normal" thing to share, post, like, search, etc. it may be sending a message to the wrong people, and even opening the door for others to take advantage of our naive intentions.  For example, posting that you are on vacation on Facebook.com can lead to a potential robbery of your home and personal possessions while you are away.  Or, clicking on a seemingly harmless link can lead to your identity being stolen and your privacy invaded.  The world of technology is a tricky one, but taking the necessary steps to maintain privacy can be time-consuming, but in the end worth it.  It should be the norm to read privacy agreements and taking the time to make sure the sites you are clicking on or plugging your information in is safe and secure.  You wouldn't sign a contract without reading the fine print, right?  The world of technology is no different.
