Norms and Responsibilities

Leah Koebke
As most other people have said, freedom of speech does come to mind when discussing digital citizenship.  Students have the right to express their ideas, thoughts and opinions, but they have the responsibility to do so in a way that is not harmful to others.  Teachers have the responsibility of helping students understand how their online behaviors will affect their future.  Students need to understand that they will change and grow as a person and their ideas will change with them.
Students should have the right to privacy and teachers have the responsibility of helping them understand why this right is important and how to protect it.  When using social media tools and other online tools, teachers should explain how to set the security settings and why that is important.  It is also the student's responsibility to learn and practice safe digital citizenship.
