Norms and Responsibilities

Lisa Jacobs
Several times in this course digital citizenship has been compared to drivers' education.  When driving, we expect others to follow the rules that will keep us safe.  The interpretation of rules can vary so that sometimes the driver (or internet user) is not even aware that something they are doing is wrong or could be harmful.  This is why there is a need for "education" and conversation about what is appropriate.  There are many things we can learn to help us anticipate situations that might arise while driving or when on the internet.  There are also new situations that may even take an experienced person by surprise.  Some traditional "good" citizenship guidelines still apply on the Internet such as T.H.I.N.K. before you speak (is it True, Helpful, Inspiring, Necessary, Kind).

Facebook would be almost wiped out if the THINK philosophy was followed. What is unacceptable today becomes the normal of tomorrow. Students and adults will benefit from understanding digital citizenship.
