Norms and Responsibilities

Brent Whipps
A few norms that I feel are important for kids to learn about early and often in the digital world would be keeping their personal information safe, knowing what information/websites are useful and watching what they post online.

Kids feel like social media is a playground and will post many items that may have personal information that someone can use against them. They also need to understand that anything they post is there forever. Kids have a hard time understanding this. The things they post about others can also get them in trouble. I've seen plenty of kids get into trouble at school for cyber bullying.

Another norm would be to help students understand what websites are helpful and how to pull information from them. I've experienced students who will just click on the first thing they see or write down and believe the first piece of information that they view when doing research for assignment. They need to understand how to use multiple sources and compare information before coming to conclusions.

I agree with your statement about students clicking on the first thing they see. They don't know if it's good information or not. I have talked to my class about Wikipedia and why it isn't the best source, but they seem to fall back to that a lot because it's usually the first one that pops up.
