Norms and Responsibilities

Judy Jacobsen
This post specifically asked about user RIGHTS.  To that point, I believe it has become a right that all individuals have access to the internet and its resources at any given place and time.  Too many businesses, government agencies, and community organizations have gone to internet based resources and information and have begun eliminating the paper methods that used to be their means for disseminating information in the past.  Because of this, access to services and information is now only available digitally and therefore MUST be accessible to all.  One example of this is filing a tax return.  Taxpayers can't get paper copies to fill out anymore.  So, if we are going to require digital access, then we have the right to have it available at all times and all places.  I would love to say it should be FREE, just like our use of most roads, but I'm not sure our capitalistic society could handle that.  Thankfully, most schools and libraries provide it free (and many businesses) so citizens do have access at specific points -- just not all places.  To me, this is our biggest RIGHT.

So, as a school, how do we ensure this right?  Continue building our infrastructure to have access everywhere we go, including outside our buildings at our extracurricular event sites.  Build a better, faster network inside, as well.  And, work with our communities and opponent schools to make sure access is available at their sites, as well.

Another right is protection.  We have the right to use the internet safely without the fear of being stalked and exploited by those with less honorable intentions, whether that be physically or financially.  We need to do a better job of making sure our networks and personal information is protected.  That includes protecting OURSELVES as well as others helping to protect us.  I would like to see a way that information that has been released can be retrieved and cleared.  As of now, what goes online, stays online.  This needs to change if we are ever to feel safe.
