Norms and Responsibilities

Teri Bowlin
One of the biggest issues I face as a principal is students misusing equipment or educational forums.  We are not a one-to-one school, but our students have access to computers in all of their classes.  The kids see these devices as their property, rather than the property of the school district.  They use the devices to access their personal or family e-mail accounts to communicate with family members, rather than working on class activities or assignments.  They also will make off-topic posts during class activities.  When I talk with students about these choices, they feel that their school e-mail accounts are "their property" and do not realize that anything they do on a school computer or through a school e-mail address should be school-related.  Some of our students also fail to understand that we really can see exactly what they have been doing on the computers, even if they log out and turn them off.  We use Google apps quite a bit and the revision history is very helpful in determining who is responsible for the content included in documents and other files.  We need to teach the kids acceptable uses and self-control measures so they can keep themselves on-task.
