Norms and Responsibilities

Dan Dooley
The norm in the digital world now is that anyone can access just about any site they choose. Should this be the norm? Who's responsibility is it to teach children to beware of the bad elements that are out there? People express themselves in ways that are inappropriate to everyone, especially children. The responsibility of every citizen who uses the internet is to understand that those who may see or read their posted information would normally have them arrested if they displayed the same thing on the street in front of minors.
It is the responsibility of both teachers and parents to teach the children to use the internet wisely. Since teachers are using the internet daily in class, there needs to be time set aside to show children how to respect others, respect themselves, and respect the place they are. Teachers cannot always be there for students when they are out of school. Parents must step up and show their children what is safe.
