Norms and Responsibilities

Luther Olson
Students need to know that the same types of laws and regulations that are put in to action in our schools, towns, and country, are still expected to be upheld while behind a screen.  The same types of expectations we would have for talking with a classmate, teacher, friend, or stranger should be the same online.  It is just a much larger community!  Knowing that you wouldn't share everything about yourself to a complete stranger, should be common sense.  That is exactly how it should be online.  Students also should know that "research" online is completely different than the old-school style of looking in published journals.  Nothing has to be "peer reviewed" on most sites, so it is important to be able to know the difference between respected sites and ones that are just opinions.  Individual opinions aren't bad, but they come with a different set of challenges.
