Norms and Responsiilites

Joseph Sheil

You should be able to utilize digital media for communication as you would any other mode of communication such as writing, speaking, video, etc.  Responsibilities which are expected under freedom of expression should apply to the digital world.  Appropriate expressions in normal communication should be the norm for digital communications.  The nature of the digital world has at least two great problems.  One is that, digitally, we are using an information "conduit" that that can be regulated, spied upon, privacy-impaired and free-speech-compromised.   A second is that the digital world easily allows us to use the Jekyl-Hyde curtain, behind which an individual can take on a behavior that is not an acceptable social norm: aggressiveness, insulting, bullying, threatening, accusing, or demeaning posts.
