Norms and responsibilities

Justin Villont

Today, with the world at your fingertips, it becomes more important than in any other decade to be aware of yourself in a digital manner.  We all have a digital foot print whether we want to or not.  If your name appeared in a news article when you were five years old, someone could find it.  In the end, the internet is going to be here for a while, it is important that we maintain, safe, cooperative, and moral communications when utilizing the internet.

If you are sitting down to your device and accessing the internet, it is your responsibility to think about what you are posting, or looking at, before you do so.  On countless occasions I have heard students grown at a picture posted of them that didn't show their "best side".  Students posting about other students in a negative way is an example of how to create a negative digital foot print.  It is also your responsibility when online to not verbally attack someone, or their opinion.  It is easy to remain anonymous online, acting how you want because nobody will know it is you posting such horrid things.  Imagine if the whole world was like that.  That is a digital world I would rather not be a part of.  It is up to the individual to maintain their morality and composure while connected to billions of other people.

As far as freedom of speech goes, it is true that you have it.  you can say and do whatever you want.  However, you are obligated to maintain a level of civility that society expects.  Just like in society if you say certain things, there are repercussions.  Your freedoms should not hinder or diminish the freedoms of another.
