Norms and responsibilities

Becky Kling
One right that we have in the United States is the freedom of speech; however, I feel as though students need to be better taught about accountability and being responsible while using the internet. Many employers have begun looking at potential employees’ social media accounts, and many employers have fired current employees due to posts that found offensive, etc. Students should be taught how to search multiple reliable sources before believing information, how to be respectful when posting their own thoughts and information, how to see the many possible outcomes when navigating the web, etc. For example, many younger users are naïve to the realities of interacting with people on the internet, and too many children have been taken advantage of by adults on the internet because they did not know any better.

Agreed. I think teaching our children BEFORE they get to use the technology is the better way, being proactive, discussing how things NEVER go away online. Even before they can understand "digital footprint", they can learn to only say kind things.
