Norms and responsibilities

What user rights do you feel should be part of the norms in this digital world?  I agree with others who have expressed that the same norms for interaction in person should apply online, too.  What a concept!  I think it requires some "humanization" by teachers - to help students understand that the "technology" didn't create the content they are reading - a person did.  A living, breathing, person like you and me.

I also think it's important to teach students to "read the room" online like they do in person.  Is it casual or formal?  Texting shorthand wouldn't be appropriate in a forum like this.

I think anyone should have the right to report bullying to a site administrator and that student behavior in online forums needs to be monitored very carefully to prevent it.  I have heard accounts of students using social media platforms outside school purview and bullying each other.  In this case, parents have the responsibility to step in.  We can't expect fourteen year olds to have the maturity to stand up or stop bullying (though we should certainly teach those skill too).

What user responsibilities do you feel should be expressed in this digital world?  I think we each have the responsibility to act with integrity, kindness, honesty online the same way we do in person.  We as teachers have a responsibility to model to our students how to navigate the Internet appropriately.
