Not inappropriate, but was potentially serious anyway

Lance Evans
I have not received any inappropriate messages that I can recall, but I have had several instances when a message that I have sent to someone has been totally and completely misunderstood by the recipient. Fortunately, I was able to understand how they misunderstood me, and was able to clear up the misunderstanding before it became a large problem. I was then able to see how to rephrase my meaning so that my intentions were clear, before communicating to other people.

If one of my messages contains personal opinions, I have a tendency now to "copy/paste" my message to my wife, for her to read through and give feedback before I send it to the recipient. Having someone "proofread" my messages like that, I think, has avoided miscommunication on several occasions, since her mode of communication is quite different from mine, and she knows me well enough to know what I'm trying to say - she is very good at reading what I'm saying, figuring out what I actually mean, and telling me if there is a disparity between the two.

I think you make a great point that proofreading is extremely important. We really have to be careful how we use words and make sure that the context is understandable by the recipient. Emails seem to be a little easier to manage for me. Text messages are often where I find myself in trouble because I tend to be in a hurry and hit send before I have proofread or checked that auto-correct has not misspoken my intents.
