Reaction to VTS and Arts integration videos/articles
What speaks to you?
I really liked the idea that VTS is just another form of critical thinking. I definitely agree, and had not thought about it that way before. The more it is used, surely student critical thinking strategies will improve. I also agree that these strategies allow students to be comfortable with the unknown. So often I have students who will not answer questions because they are afraid to be incorrect, but whenever we do something in the arts, they see it as more of an opinion and have more desire to share with the class. I liked in the video from education closet how she discussed the importance of a strong arts program. I wouldn't be able to do many things that I like to do without the help of at least being able to bounce ideas off of the arts team.
I think after watching the videos and reading the article that I realize I am not as intentional and consistent as I need to be as I create arts integration plans. I occasionally will meet with the art/music teacher to see which skills have been taught so I can incorporate them, but the education closet video made me realize how important it is for me to have a consistent system for doing that.
How do I currently integrate arts?
I have used the visual thinking strategies to make observations while reading, and in science and social studies (though I could probably use them more often than I do.) In my class we have also used music/dance to show understanding of the meaning of text. We also enjoy creating tableaus (still pictures with our bodies) to show understanding of a scene in the text and to compare different stories. We have also used arts in social skills to act out our understanding of how to act in certain situations and how to problem solve.
