Rights & Responsibilities

Nicki Ruthaivilavan
I believe our students have the right to access information from online resources and share their thinking and learning using a digital platform. The internet is a powerful tool, and as they say in Spiderman, with great power comes great responsibility. We need to teach our students how to responsibly navigate their digital world. Others have posted about social etiquette in face-to-face situations, and how those same norms should apply to digital situations. We need to teach our students how to be safe, respectful, and responsible online. I think often we assume because our students are digital natives, we don't need to do much teaching around how to use online tools, keep ourselves safe, balance tech use and non-tech use, etc. But digital citizenship is something that really needs to be taught explicitly with plenty of time for discussion and questions that arise from authentic scenarios.
