Rights & Responsibility Norms

Steffany King
As a high school teacher and parent of an 8th grader, this topic seems to be a common one in my daily conversation.  I have taken to relating the rights and responsibilities directly to the Core Values we have adopted and agreed to within our school community.

Respect: This is a concept aimed at both yourself and those who view whatever you choose to share.  Respect is earned and the items you share can either help of hinder you in the eyes of another persons opinion.  That is not to say you should avoid posting information which may challenge a viewer to think or to see, but it should do so without putting them down or should give warning on content if it is not appropriate for everyone who may have access to it.  The knowledge that everything you post may have impact on your friendships, jobs, education, and future should be part of the thought process with each item you post.

Integrity: Have you made your imprint using the best intentions?  Everything you post will continue to be available long after you have deleted it.  Think before you push submit so that you are sure it will be seen by others with the perception you intended to illustrate.  Once words are shared it is hard to take them back or justify that your intention was different than it may have come across.

Engagement: Digital technology is a tool not the end all of a process.  There is more to it than just plugging in or searching for information.  The how and why must be addressed with everything we do and this includes the quantity, quality and purpose of digital interaction we have on a daily basis.  It is not a replacement for other methods of learning, it is an addition to our toolbox.  Use it wisely and at appropriate times for best results.

With any choice you make there is responsibility for your actions and you may not always see the repercussions immediately, so think wisely before you post!
