Rights and Responsibilities of Internet Usage

Rebecca J Branan
To me, User Rights means that people should have access to clear and accurate information.  The user should, by law, be vigilantly protected from scams and predators.

I definitely agree that for underage students, it should be treated more as a privilege.  I also agree that we have to remember students are still learning to use the internet appropriately (as are MANY adults!!) and punishment or consequences need to be given accordingly.

User Responsibilities to me means to use the internet in a civil manner.  It is the responsibility of the user to be as civil as possible in conversations and exchanges, be it a conversation with personal friends or with complete strangers in a comment thread. Treat others as you would want to be treated.

Another responsibility that very much applies to students is honesty and integrity as far as plagiarism and making sure to give credit where credit is due for ideas.

Finally, a recent issue is the spread of “fake news” or bogus articles.  I think it’s really important to fact check before sharing or using something as a resource
