Rights and Responsibilities

Michaela Seeman
I believe digital rights that everyone should have are the right to free speech (within social and legal boundaries), to be able to create, to share what they have created, and to collaborate with others. I also believe that digital users should have the right to privacy, but this also is limited by the choices that the user makes.

I think it is a digital user's responsibility to keep their own information as safe as possible, be respectful of the ideas of others, and responsibly deciding what to share, keeping their digital footprint in mind. They also need to stick to using websites that are a good fit for them (age appropriate, etc), and to check information they gather from sources for accuracy. With how fast technology is changing, I feel that it is our responsibility as educators to make sure we teach about these rights and responsibilities in our classrooms. Our young students are constantly learning about social norms in the real world. They need to be taught the social norms of the digital world, as well.
