Rights and Responsibilities

Katie Williams
Rights:
We all have rights that protect us. Having those rights also includes certain duties and responsibilities. Freedom of speech has limits. We need to model behavior for our students and children. Leadership is a choice and when you go online it needs to be taken seriously.
Responsibilities:
Along with our rights we also have our ethics. We need to model and teach the right thing to do especially online. Students need to know there is another human being on the other end. All people have the responsibility to do the right thing even when no one is looking.

I agree with your responsibilities! I think that students at times feel like they can say whatever they want to online because it is not do face to face or is behind a code name. When a student feels disconnected to what they are saying about others or do not feel like there can be consquences, they tend to be more willing to post negative comments to or about others.

If adults model the behavior that we are still responible for what we put out there in the digital world, students will see that being online is not a free pass for anyone.
