Scratch

Shelly Salasberry
Scratch is a computer coding program that was listed as a creativity tool.  I had not seen this particular program before.  It is very colorful and user friendly.  There are getting started helps, a step by step Scratch guide, printable Scratch project cards, video tutorials, tip windows and discussion forums.  Best of all, it’s free.  I work in a k-4 building and this program could be used to make computer coding possible and fun for those students. We have used coding programs before. Coding really makes them put on the thinking caps.  Some students catch onto it quite nicely while others are a bit intimidated.  Therefore, the printable Scratch project cards would be excellent to keep the more advanced moving along and not be bored. I believe hands on computer skills are so important and for some, school is the only place that they get that experience.

And by the way, I think that Google Drive is a fantastic tool to use with students.  I didn’t choose this for my discussion topic since it wasn’t new to me but I think it’s GREAT.  The student is able to continue working no matter what computer is being used.  No more worrying about saving work to servers that may be down when you need them most.    Students can also work as partners and share a sheet or document with the group.  No more working on a project at home only to find a compatibility issue won’t let the student bring up the work at school.  Yeah!
