Section 1 Discussion Forum BAL

Rebecca Bal
What was new learning for you?
I was surprised at how much of the "basics" I did not know. I was unfamiliar with a little bit of each section. For example, I already knew about the primary and secondary colors but I was unaware of all the other elements of color such as analogue, contrast, etc. In addition, I already have a basic understanding of the concepts of shapes, lines, and space, but that was more from a mathematical aspect. I didn't actually think of it in terms of an art aspect until I read the terms and considered the picture examples.

What was a review?
As I mentioned above, much of the basics of each area were review. I already has a very basic understanding of color, shapes, lines, and space, but once I got deeper into each areas lesson I learned something new.  For example, for line, I already understood diagonal, horizontal, etc, but I never thought of them in terms of what they represented in art, such as horizontal representing death.

How can you apply these concepts to a content area you currently teach?
I am a high school special education co-teacher in the language arts department. Much of my job consists of adapting and accommodating curriculum in order to support students with disabilities in understanding the material and being successful. In addition, many times these students struggle with motivation and being interested in the content. I think that by better understanding art, I could use some of these concepts to modify curriculum so that students who are more interested in art, can prove their learning through art. For example, I am already thinking about ways they could use some of these basic terms in math with art, and in language arts by using art to show their understanding of various novels or texts.
