Snopes--A Fact Checking Site That Features News & Urban Legends

Margaret Caldwell
When I was looking around online to see if I could find some of the hoax sites that I had looked at earlier---I found a huge list of them on the Iowa State University Library website---I found the Snopes fact-checking site and read a bit and found it interesting. I crossed my eyes when I saw the clip about President Donald Trump congratulating Vladimir Putin on his recent election win. The Snopes site confirmed that President Barack Obama had actually done the same thing years earlier. Whatever their presidential reasoning is... There was also an hoax about people licking toilets in an effort to oust President Donald Trump. Some people have picked that up as a movement and joined it, but, it appears to be having little effect on Mr. Trump's exit from power.

Snopes is a great resource. I haven't used it in a couple years, but I like to share it with college students because the examples work well with that audience. I also like Snopes's treatment of context and assumptions on at least some of the example write-ups, and the simple color coding.
