Social Media and Online Identities

Karlyn McCutchan
I personally am very active online in the social media world.  I manage several instagram accounts for our school as well as facebook pages.  I personally have accounts in Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and even TikTok I make sure regularly that my personal pages are either set to private settings or the content on them represents not only me but what my district stands for.  I teach elem music and technology and know first hand how hard it is for kids to understand the digital world and how nothing ever really goes away.  I am constantly reminding kids of federal laws regarding social media and chat rooms.  The majority of my student are under 13 and therefore by law are not eligible to be on social media, however they are quick to say well my parents let me.  I feel alot of our education on digital citizenship is lost on the students because of the contradictions they get at home.  Many parents are uneducated in the digital world because my generation didn't have that growing up and do not see the threat in it.
