Substitute Applications in Financial Literacy

Richard Oviatt
In my experience substitute teaching grades 6-12, my most frequent opportunities to connect lesson plans to financial literacy topics have come in math courses. My engineering background helps me to offer practical uses for the math fundamentals being taught to students so they can see the potential for personal benefit in addition to simply meeting a grade requirement. The concept of compound interest and the power of saving and investing early in life is an example that helps make the material relevant to a student.
