Using Audacity

Audacity is an awesome tool! Its one of the easiest ways to record sound there is. The program shows the waveform of the sound, adding an element of science (physics) to the topic of recording music. Waveforms of different sound sources can be compared, sound can be manipulated in myriad ways allowing students to explore, in depth sound phenomena such as echo, reverb, stereo, editing, balance, timber, and much more.

I use audacity all of the time in my band classroom.  Students who are not able to come to lessons or have time to take quizzes are able to record their playing tests, convert them to mp3's and email them to me.  They are allowed to edit out mistakes if they want to put the time in because it is a great introduction to working in a music studio and editing sound tracks.
