Using Google:Gmail

Jean Meyer
Background information about my teaching position:  I am the director and teacher in an after school learning program for children grades 1-12.  This program is with a community nonprofit organization.  When parents/guardians drop off and pick up their children, I have opportunities to speak to them. We also have monthly parent meetings.  I plan to use my Gmail account for the after school program.  Giving my email to our parents/guardians and getting their emails will be a way to contact anyone who has an email or who would like to receive information in this way.  I can use the email to remind them of parent meetings, information I received from visiting with their child's teacher, reminding them of a project that was started with us and soon due at school, or updating them as to how their child is doing in our program.  Using tabs and filters to organize these contacts with parents/guardians will be very helpful...  Google Hangouts can be another way to communicate with a parent/guardian who would like to receive information like that.  I think Google Hangouts or the video meeting could be a great way for children to keep in touch with some of the volunteers from a distance who come to work with us several times a year.  We have many volunteers who would enjoy keeping in touch in that way!  Volunteers would be in a position to broaden the experiences of our children in creative ways, for example music and artistic experiences or introduction to particular hobbies or interesting books shared back and forth one to the other, pen pal opportunities with other children, sharing adventures in other parts of the United States.  And there will be other uses of Google Hangouts as we find them!
