Google Classroom, Google Drive, Google Connect and other Google tools are all valuable for the modern classroom. As a substitute I can see how these tools can be valuable in staying in touch with the teacher, lesson plans, and daily work assignments. Google is just easy to use and at everyone's fingertips. When I worked at Ohio State University, I could always find OSU documents faster in Google than on the OSU search engine.
