reactions to VTS

penelope miller
• What speaks to you?
The first impression is how much VTS resonates with classroom teachers. I sat in on a Yenawine presentation at a NAEA convention many years as ago. My art education friends were not impressed. I do not agree, the theory and commercialization program sounds good and has great research. But there is that nagging thought wondering where if these ideas originally came from other art educators. For example, OSU’s Barrett’s steps on art criticism or Feldman’s description of art begin criticism from University of Georgia, or Michael Parsons’ development of aesthetic development using his own interview technique developed in the 1980s as one of Harvard’s Kohlberg’s eleven graduate students researching various aspects of children’s development.
Honestly I have mixed feelings about this work.

• Does it give you any ideas?
I love having art criticism discussions with all ages of students. But I had not carefully given administration the resulting advantages for student thinking and growth. I plan on correcting that immediately.

• How do you integrate art into your current curriculum?
I have to admit that I have been lazy in art integration. I need to communicate with other teachers upfront, during, and afterwards of a project that integrates other subjects. This needs to be very deliberately communicated instead of staying in my own little word. I think that I will add this part to my lesson plans!
I wrote this earlier in the afternoon and hav been thinking about my plans for student to study birds  the first month back. I am getting loads of ideas from this section!!!! Hurrah!

• Other reactions?
This is a really good course and uses a wide variety of research from all over!
