Andrew Reif: Inappropriate Use of Digital Media

Share a time when you or someone you know was the recipient of an inappropriate use of digital media or when you might have used digital media in an inappropriate manner. How did this make you or others feel? What might have been done differently?

A student was using AI to create inappropriate content during school hours. The AI cite is not blocked and somehow was not being picked up by the firewall. While none of the content was not depicting any students or staff of the school, it was still not the place for such activity. Additionally, the AI cite is available for responsible use, and this was clearly an abuse of the tool. Students who were able to observe this happening felt uncomfortable and troubled by what they witnessed and told the teacher privately about what was happening later on. That student lost digital privileges for a short time as a consequence. The consequence was appropriate, but I don't know if more a conversation happened with that student regarding the inappropriate use of AI. I do see AI as a tool, and while the conversation with the student would have been awkward it is still a learning moment to use the tool more responsibly.
