Students will also know the definitions of each term and have an understanding of how these terms create mood and action in art work.

Introduction: Teacher will display The Ninth Wave
Students will engage in discussion using VTS strategies as the art work relates to the elements and principles of design. They will be guided to talk about mood if the discussion doesnt present the topic naturally.
Teacher (T) will model using the element line. (T) will draw lines over The Ninth Wave. Students will count the lines the boat will most likely cross to pass through the storm. Students will be prompted to think about the mood and the action that is taking place. If we were to create a story at each engagement we have with line what might that look like?
Teacher will write what the sailors are doing at the starting point. Then she will come to line one and look at the action happening. Students will engage with 4 square partners and come up with a story event. They will do this for each line encountered by the boat as it progresses through the water.
Teacher will then prompt students to notice the title of the painting, then give a brief summary of the artwork and the sailors legend.
The Students will view Friedrich’s The Monk by the Sea  as a whole group and engage in a VTS discussion strategy again related to lines and mood.
Students will complete the same process but this time with peer groups as support.
Students will compare the story events and the mood of each of their shared writings. Teacher will prompt for the definition of the term outline and ask, How does a plot diagram look like an outline?
Extension to reading selections:Students will be asked to identify the story events in their current reading selections. They will also be asked to recognize reading selections that relate to the lines of The Monk by the Sea.
