I'm answering to then above question...
At my school all students had very similar passwords for their school email accounts (first initial, last name and a series of numbers that was the same for everyone). So a 4th grade female student of mine became the victim of an incident when a male student from another 4th grade classroom logged onto her account from his iphone after hours. He changed one of her assignments/story she was writing for school and he sent emails to the teacher and students pretending to be her. They were mean emails. I did applaud our district tech team for quickly tracking the source and proving it wasn't my student and then furthermore proving who it was. It was some high tech detective work!
At first my student was accused. This was so embarrassing for her. To feel accused and helpless to defend herself was devastating. Her parents had to be contacted then of course once it was known who really did it, his parents were contacted. This ordeal cost a lot of people a lot of time and effort to solve and rectify it..... and for some, emotional embarrassment/stress. Then of course he had consequences for this serious offense. Hopefully he learned his lesson. I was furious that a10 year old who should know right from wrong thought it was ok to do this!
The school district should have had more secure passwords which could have prevented this. So, acting on their lesson learned, the very next day every child was assigned their own personalized password. It was explained to them why and they were told about the precautions needed in technology and reminded of the etiquette expectations. It was a serious talk and a stark reminder of digital citizenship.
