What I've learned...
Through the process of this class I've learned a wider variety of vocabulary for identifying art. It made me realize that everywhere is a good place to even look for art. From form to triptych, 3d shapes to 3 tiered artwork, art is prevalent in our daily lives.

This course helped me to review past interpretations of these terms. Much of the vocabulary offered in this course made me realize how integrated art is in all subjects and experiences. I'm originally a music major and found terms imbedded in the music history and styles of pieces I've studied and performed.
This course also allowed me to recall my first experiences with art classes that really stuck with me when we learned the color wheel and explored rayographs, chalk, pastels, shading, pointillism, etc.
How I can use in my class...
When it comes to using what I've learned from this course in my daily 4th grade classroom, I think of the value of colors in art and shades of meaning in literacy. Creating an anchor chart that correlates depth in word choice to depth in colors would be a great way to make my lesson visual.
I can use art in my lessons daily to help my students visualize my lessons.

I have just begun to take over this course. It sounds like you have applied the concepts to your daily work. I really liked the lessons from the major NYC museums. They can be enjoyed in your classroom, too. I teach K8 in Phoenix. I introduced color wheels by looking at artists who love color – Ellsworth Kelly, Joseph Albers, Helen Frakenthaler, and Mark Rothko. Then we looked at the way artists research color before beginning a project. The kids loved it. There are many connections between music and art – thus the common core standards.

That sounds wonderful! I love how you’re connecting art history with hands-on learning in your classroom. Using artists like Rothko and Albers to introduce the color wheel is such a creative way to spark curiosity, and it’s great to hear that your students were so engaged. I agree—there are so many natural connections between music and art, and tying those to the standards makes the lessons even more meaningful.
