Art Concepts and Termonology

Lauren Thorson
• What was new learning for you?
While going through the slide shows and websites, there were some new terms that I learned that go with art.  The first being that there is rhythm and movement in art.  I never would have thought of using the term rhythm to describe art.  But rhythm can be shown in art by making the observer think that the art is moving.  I also enjoyed learning about the color wheel.  I had no idea about chromatic neutrals or analogous colors.  Now I can use them in my art lessons when teaching.
• What was a review?
There were quite a few things that were a review for myself when going through the slides and websites.  One was all the different kinds of lines that are out there.  I had already done many lessons with my students dealing with lines.  The color wheel set up was a review for myself.  One of my favorite projects that I do with my students deals with making a color wheel picture.
• How can you apply these concepts to a content area you currently teach?
I am currently teaching 4th grade in a small catholic school so I teach my own art for my students. After having the review of the terms, I find it so important to use the terms with my students.  Also it has given me so many project ideas of how we can show each of the terms in a project each week.  Then at the end of the year, we can do projects that involve them all!

Hello Lauren,
I too didn't necessarily consider rhythm and movement when describing art. When I think of those terms I typically think of dance which is an art, but in terms of understanding movement in art pieces, such as when they were talking about certain types of lines that representing movement, that was interesting and new to me.

I think it is very neat that you work at a small school where not only do you teach the core classes but that you also teach art. This must give you alot of opportunities to be very creative in your teaching. Do you have combine your art lessons with your other core subjects? For example, using art to teach math or language arts standards? I think that would be a very exciting teaching position to hold. I bet you are very busy!
