What speaks to you?
I think that these concepts definitely spoke to me. As a teacher you sometimes feel that you are getting torn in different directions. Its good to feel validated when you are adding art into the classroom. It was also nice to realize that even arts enrichment is a good way to add arts with your students. We are all trying to do the best that we can and every lesson can be improved on, but integrating art is helpful for the students to truly learn and remember the content. I like how the Arts Integration takes these concepts deeper. I really like the connection between the notes in music class to the fraction concepts in math class. I believe that I am using some Arts Integration in the classroom, but the Arts Enrichment ideas is where I could really improve in some of the my teaching strategies.
Does it give you any ideas?
I like the idea of the notes in music to fraction concepts. It also just gives me an idea of connecting with the special teachers to continue brainstorming ideas to help make the connections. One thing that I have done is have the children connect movement to the classroom. For example have them stretch and skip count instead of going by ones. Another way is connecting some mindfulness to content areas. For example having them breath and draw shapes in the air. The ideas are endless. The most important thing is being aware of what the specials teachers are teaching and when they are teaching these things. That will open up opportunities to make these connections.
How do you integrate art into your current curriculum?
I think you allow the children some choices that include art. A few examples would be allowing making in the classroom. For example having them make shapes that connect with math vocabulary. Another way would be to allow students to draw a poster, act out, or do a video of content in science. For example each student could do a project on environments by choosing one of these threw concepts. You could add parameters on certain choices. Another thing that I try to do in the math class is allow them to answer the question in the way that they feel the most comfortable. They might be drawing numbers or listing numbers. Math doesn't have to be done one way and it can be a bit of an art if you let the student show their problem solving skills. This would give students opportunity for choose, but still scalfolding them down a specific path that the teacher might have.
Other reactions?
I feel that you just have to be open minded about making these connections to other subject matter. You also have to be willing to collaborate and see what other teachers around you are doing. It is easy to lose track of what is going on in the students special areas. If you want to add Arts Integration you will have to make sure that you are aware of what is happening and how you can make connections accrues curriculum. That is the main focus on teaching at a higher level. Making this cross curriculum connections and implementation ideas that work with other content areas. Anytime you can add arts to the content you give more ownership to the students while allowing more students to have a voice through there work.
