I enjoyed reading the three articles relating to art in the classroom. I truly believe that the integration of art in the classroom can truly help the whole child. I have seen this in the classroom while teaching and I am glad that these articles back it up with research. I believe the idea behind multiple intelligence really helps support this way of thinking. Children and humans for that matter need an opportunity to show their voice. Art allows students to express their voice in different ways besides talking or writing. I believe that this is a life long lesson that will help us as a society. Art does give students choice and it also allows them to work on their reasoning skills and analytical thinking. I do believe that art is not extra it is integral for child development.
I also liked the idea of how integrating art helps collaboration in the classroom. I believe that having art in the classroom allows a lot of students to ask questions and have the freedom to express themselves without being judged. Part of being a teacher is grading and judging them on their ability. The more we can help them and support them through scafolding the better. I do believe that art can make some of the subject matter more fun and stick in the children's brains. If students visualize a part of the curriculum that will be beneficial for understanding. I liked this quote from the last article, "They had spoken of how the increased engagement students evidenced in arts units seemed to help them remember more; the data showed little evidence of any increase in the amount of content knowledge that students gained from their arts units."(How Arts Integration Supports Student Learning: Students She Light on Connections, Demoss Karen) I will make sure I think about this when doing my curriculum planning in the future.
