Every day in our lives you can see inappropriate use of internet. If you log onto Facebook, the first things that you can see are people (they are at times called "trolls" using social media to bully or disrespect others or just to start fights / controversy. It is easy for students to bully and disrespect their fellow classmates because hiding behind a computer screen typing negative comments is easier then saying it face to face. I think our society has a huge problem with internet bullying and this needs to be addressed both in the classroom but especially at home. Parents need and should monitor their child's computer use and text messages.
My older sister is not on any social media but she currently has twin 13 year old daughters. I have now almost every social media account possible so I can help my sister monitor my nieces' posts, comments, photos, etc. I have had to address a few issues with the girls after posting some mean posts to other girls their age. Kids just don't understand the lasting affect that a mean post can have forever. After discussing it with the girls, they have not posted anything inappropriate yet (or as far as I know).
