"Please remember to communicate with dignity and respect," is our school motto. It is stated every day during announcements, and it is what we aim to do daily. This should be the motto of the digital world. If people thought about this when they engage in digital activity, it could have a profound impact on what is created. Users have the right to express themselves, but in a way that shows respect and regard towards others. We (society as a whole) have not done a good job of remembering this and teaching the points of an argument and how to disagree appropriately. We can 'kindly disagree' with opinions and assert how we feel at the same time. This is a lost art form that I fail to see utilized anymore. Digital media is the perfect format for name calling, bullying, and expressing opinions because the face to face contact is removed. User norms should be to communicate in a dignified and respectful way that is void of intimidation and degradation towards others.
