Communication is key.

Using Gmail and it's chat functions makes necessary communication simple!  Providing a picture makes it not only fun, but useful in meeting parents or other staff.  Keeping parents informed on a regular basis allows them to have an active role in their child's education.  Using email is usually the fastest way to communicate in this day and age.  Using some of the labels can organize emails making it easy to reference past conversations.
