5th grade students will create a night sky image when studying space and stars.
Objective:
Students will be relate the brightness of stars to their distance from Earth through painting.

Earth and Space Sciences
5–ESS1–1. Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth.
Materials:
black, purple, or dark blue construction paper (large)
oil pastels
Introduction:
Review what students have learned about the distance of the Sun and stars to Earth. How does that affect the way we see them? Explain that we are going to view a night sky painting, and then take what we know about a star's brightness in relation to Earth and use it to create our own night sky artwork.
Guided Practice:
Show student the Van Gogh painting "The Starry Night Over the Rhone. " Have students discuss what they see in the picture. What is going on in this picture? What makes you think that? What more can you find? What might we include in our own night sky artwork?
Independent Practice:
Remind students that we have learned about stars having different levels of brightness due to size, heat, distance from Earth. Challenge students to try to portray these differences in their night sky artwork. Allow students time to work on their night sky projects.
Closing:
Have students meet with partners to discuss their night sky artwork. Meet as a class and have partners discuss what they noticed in each other's artwork. Possibly select one or two examples to have the class discuss using the same questions from the guided practice.
