Lesson Plan for Creativity

Grade Level: Fifth Grade
Objective: Students will create a poster modeled after movie posters, to advertise their historical figure’s part in the upcoming musical wax museum.
Art Vocabulary: harmony, highlight, positive space, visual art to communicate thoughts, feelings or ideas, line, shape, form, color, value, texture, scale, proportion, imagination, figure, negative space, border, emphasis, contrast, proportion, symmetry, overlap, landscape...or others we have discussed

Each student will choose 4 elements from his/her wax museum script to incorporate into their poster. For example: the character’s face, a flag, the date of an historical battle, and a question such as “Did he have to sacrifice his life?”.
Students will pencil sketch a rough draft in pencil on 8 ½ x 11” paper using at least four techniques from art vocabulary (e.g. negative space, texture, line, contrast)
Students will pencil sketch final copy onto 11x17” poster board
Students will choose 4 colors, within one media (e.g. oil pastels, markers, colored pencils)
Students will color in final draft, and sign their artwork.
Assessment: Students share respective work in pairs with three different classmates, providing feedback for each other around the art and the meaning conveyed by the art.
The feedback will be hand-written on a form, answering three opinion questions:
Which art technique do you feel caused a striking effect on the poster?
What was a meaning making take-away for you on this poster?
What one suggestion would you offer your friend, to increase the vivid impact of the art, the meaning-making, or the understanding of the poster’s message?
Each student will make one enhancement to their artwork, as they see fit, based on the feedback.
Each student will put into their portfolio, the three feedback forms received.
Conclusion: Students will display their posters along the hallway, marquee style, to advertise the characters and stories featured in the upcoming 5th grade wax museum.
