DC: Inappropriate Use Digital Media

Tyler Tassell
In working with students I have noticed that they are not afraid to say whatever they want on the internet or in a text message.  They would never say some of the things they type in person to someone.  It seems they think no one reads it, or only the person they want to see it will see it.  I also have found that students will answer a text but not pick up a phone call.  Communication has gotten a lot worse in our society.  Not just because they are busy, but the verbal/face to face (over the phone included).  If a student has something they want to express, they do so by posting, snapchatting, texting, and so on.  Face to face or verbal communication over the phone has somewhat disappeared.

Being a coach and teacher, I use digital media and text messages a lot for quick communication.  This can save a lot of time.  There have been times when student/athletes have not responded very positively and I know they would not have responded in that way if we were in a face to face setting.  I have also taken some responses incorrectly where the student/athlete then responded apologizing to me for how their message may have sounded.  I almost always include my assistant coach(es) in my messages to help me safety wise as an educator/coach.

Students also don't realize how they say something and how it can be taken in a different tone, context, or way.  They also don't always think about the actions of their digital media.  We used to teach, think before we speak, and now have added, think before we type/text/post.
