Share a time when you or someone you know was the recipient of an inappropriate use of digital media or when you might have used digital media in an inappropriate manner.
Last year, one of my grade level team members was beginning her first year of teaching. One of her students for math (which happened to be one of my homeroom students) sent out an Instagram video of her listening to hard rock music with the caption, “I need to get all my anger out because (teacher) sucks at teaching math!” It was sent to several other members of the math class.
How did this make you or others feel? What might have been done differently?
Ironically, several of the students who got the message felt incredibly uncomfortable with it, and eventually showed it to the teacher mentioned. She didn’t think much of it, but I was outraged. I advised her to show the principal, which she eventually did. The principal ended up talking with several of the students, and got a copy of the video. He then called in the student who sent the video in addition to her parents for a conversation about appropriate technology use. I then had a follow-up with the student, and reminded her that while it may be ok to think something, once it enters the digital world, it’s available for anyone to see it, whether you want them to our not.
