With Twitter, you can protect your tweets.  This means your tweets are private and only your followers can see your tweets.  If someone would like to follow you they sen you a request and you can approve or deny them the opportunity.  Another important setting is blocking.  You can block accounts that you do not want to follow you.  You can also be warned when an account to tweet contains sensitive material.
