I looked at my Facebook account: I have my profile set to private and you must send me a direct message to add me.
However, I am always aware of when I add new apps on my phone (instagram, boomarang, etc) that request different permissions - sometimes even asking to sign up through Facebook. The options will automatically connect my email, name, and phone number (which is found through my phone server - I do not post this online.) So I always make sure to uncheck what is not needed to protect my information. I also randomly go back into privacy settings to update and don't download or use any apps that need excessive information.
