The only social media website that I am familiar with is Facebook. I know that there are privacy settings that let the user set who gets to see their content. They can set it to friends only and all the way to being totally open for the world. I have discussed these settings with some of my students in the past. Some of them were not even aware that these settings existed.
I have also had discussions with students about how the police will sometimes visit social media web sites to get information about people they think have committed a crime.
